MDF - medium density fibreboard - The Heritage Artifacts

MDF

Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) is an engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood residuals into wood fibres, often in a defibrator, combining it with wax and a resin binder, and forming it into panels by applying high temperature and pressure. MDF does not contain knots or rings, making it more uniform and stable than natural wood during cutting and in service. It holds better to hinges and screws due to high density. It is easy to stain and colour, unlike natural wood which takes a long time. Because of smooth edges, MDF can easily be cut and carved into different designs.

MDF is best for indoor use. Builders use them to make walls, doors, millworks, store fixtures, even shelves and cabinetry. Artisans use them to make creative and colorful boxes, stools, small cabinets, photo frames etc. MDF boards come in different grades and thickness, including moisture and fire retardant variants. They also come in a range of colors, patterns, and decorative finishes.
