Bishnupur, West Bengal - The Heritage Artifacts

Bishnupur, West Bengal

When the Central Cottage Industries Emporium, founded in 1952, chose the ‘Bankura Horse’ as its logo, it lifted the little-known terracotta art of West Bengal to global fame. Bishnupur, a town in the Bankura District of West Bengal, is located at about 132 kms from Kolkata. It is called the temple town of West Bengal for its lavish heritage, proud culture, brilliant architecture and tales of terracotta.

The town has a glorious past when it prospered in the 17th and early 18th centuries. Ruled by a line of Hindu Rajas of the Malla dynasty, Bishnupur developed a unique form of architecture and has perhaps the most brilliant and detailed terracotta work in Eastern India that has withstood the ravages of time. The Terracotta tiles used in temples and sacred buildings depict stories from Ramayana, Mahabharata and other mythologies.
