Natural stone - The Heritage Artifacts

Natural stone

The stone-carving tradition in India is one of the richest in the world. Guilds of masons and stone carvers have existed here since the 7th century B.C. The classical tradition of stone carving was closely linked with architecture. All major temples of India, be it Puri, Konark, Khajuraho, Kailash Temple, or Shore Temple at Mahabalipuram illustrate the rich tradition of Indian stone carvings. Indian Kings and Emperors have always been in favor of stone made forts and palaces. During Mughal rule also lot of stone architectures were constructed by different rulers of which the majestic Taj Mahal in Agra is still a wonder of the world.

Agra being an important centre for stone carving is famous for its perforated stone fretwork, inlay work and marble mosaic. The stones mainly used are Soap stone, Alabaster and Paleva which comes in different colors. All these stones are comparatively soft than others which helps artisans to create the most intricate design even in the smallest form of art
